On board with curriculum...and dumb words....

I have officially completed my first day of teaching MS curriculum! :) All went well. Due to some of my students taking band, I now have THIRTY students in my 6th hour Language Arts and that leaves only SEVEN students for last period. I have decided I can suffer through the thirty and get my reprieve during last hour. I am relating to the MSer's well. They seem to like me with the exception of the homework. I am a little tough about some things but I always try to have a sense of humor about it. For instance today one of my favorite students (and I am not being sarcastic) was working on her vocabulary sheet (which really was quite challenging) stated, "Where did these dumb words come from?"! She didn't mean to be funny or even have a attitude like one would assume. She is exceptionally smart and couldn't believe how tough this work was...I cracked up and proclaimed to the class that they might as well get used to DUMB words. It was my job to teach them words they DO NOT know-not teach them words they already know. This is just something you would have had to been there for...but since this student often emails me -I have already emailed her and asked her if she managed to get her DUMB words done. The words....BEWILDERED, PANG, MORTIFIED, ANTICIPATION...they are not necessarily tough but the sheet was challenging and I want it to be. I give them an evil laugh every time I pass out this hard work-but when they accomplish it-I praise them highly! :) Oh-the joy!

Awesome! Glad it went well for you. That was always a little scary to me to teach a new curriculum. You and I can totally relate to that. Third time is a charm usually! Sounds like it is for you. You could start calling them DUMB words, instead of vocabulary :) have fun
