Making Memories

As a parent, I have found it more important to make sure that the things that get fed into our holidays are things that are of value and worth. There is a verse that has become the barometer of my thoughts when planning days and gatherings ..."Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things [are] noble, whatever things [are] just, whatever things [are] pure, whatever things [are] lovely, whatever things [are] of good report, if [there is] any virtue and if [there is] anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things." - Phl 4:8 NKJV

This Christmas we have tried to live up to these words. When we were discussing Christmas and the gifts we were to open on Christmas morning we focused on why we were going to receive gifts...because we love each other. We bought gifts for each other and for some of our close friends simply because we love them. We gave good gifts....not gifts out of obligation nor with strings attached, but gave just to give and in the giving we presented each other with the love that was attached to the gift. This year we made a conscious effort to give each of the children something they really really wanted. One received a cell phone, one got guitar hero 3, another a ps3 game and the youngest got "Butterscotch". We were blessed to be able to give these things to them, but we first wanted them to understand that as much as they liked the gifts...our love far out shined the "things". As they each began to open the gift that they most desired we said "we are giving this to you because we love you so much" and they when they opened it the look of pure joy fed our spirits and filled our hearts. Each child gave the one opening the gift undivided attention as they opened the gift, it was a day full of memories!

And yes, Rob and I each received wonderful gifts as well, things we both really wanted...but the day was the greatest of gifts...a reflection of The Gift given to us before we were ever born...a gift that was given with great sacrifice and great love. Merriest of Christmases to each of you.

I completely agree. My daughter J received more than normal (from me -the normal-from others-not-lol). And it isn't about the *things* as I tell her-she is just loved beyond words and her dad and I desire her to know it EVERY day! ;) Merry Christmas to you and yours! We made some memories too. This Christmas is a little tainted-but nothing that can't be handled. ;) Blessings beyond words to all our devoted readers on this Christmas Day!
